Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a substance derived from platelets found in the blood, whose primary function is to stop bleeding by promoting clotting. Platelets contain numerous growth factors. These cells, thanks to these growth factors, stimulate tissue regeneration and the production of new collagen in the treated area. In PRP injections, the goal of skin rejuvenation is to reduce fine wrinkles caused by aging, minimize blemishes, increase skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of pores, restore skin moisture, and achieve radiance. The restorative effects of PRP are also utilized in the neck and décolleté area, and this method is also used to reduce hair loss and increase hair thickness in the scalp.
It is important for the patient to inform their doctor about their health status and any medications they may be taking, especially if they have any chronic illnesses. The patient should stop taking blood-thinning medications such as aspirin and pain relievers, as well as supplements like Vitamin C and Vitamin E, and multivitamin tablets, two weeks prior to the procedure.
Patients are advised to avoid excessive sun exposure and high temperatures before undergoing PRP treatment. They should also refrain from alcohol and smoking for 3 days prior to the procedure, as this can prolong the healing process. If the procedure is to be performed under sedation, the patient must fast for at least 6 hours beforehand.
The doctor performing the procedure first takes a small amount of blood from the patient’s body. The doctor separates the blood by centrifuging it in special tube systems, obtaining a content rich in platelets and therefore growth factors. Then, after numbing the application area, the doctor completes the procedure by injecting the separated plasma into the face using very thin and short needles.
The doctor can also apply PRP to the skin surface without injection, by creating microchannels using a tool such as a dermapen, dermaroller, or needle radiofrequency (gold needle).
